Inaugural Blog
So, this is my first ever blog. I have thought about writing one for quite a while now, but didn't think that I had enough to say about anything to maintain a current of writing on a consistent basis. But since I lost my job a few weeks ago (one of the many HP employees laid off by the new streamlining CEO--and get this...the same week that I graduated from college!) I have quite a lot of free time on my hands now, so I may as well put it to good (sort of) use.
I love using footnotes in writing. Since this is not possible in my blog, I use many, many sets of parentheses. Whenever I seem to be going in a good, straight direction of thought in my writing, I veer off into something related (closely or not) and almost lose myself in the fork. I used to feel kind of bad (damn prescriptive grammarians!) about this writing habit, until I started to read Sarah Vowel. Have any of you read her? Or listened to her on NPR? She is fabulous. She is nerdy and funny all at the same time, and how can you go wrong with that?
In her book Assassination Vacation, she explains how several presidential assassinations are related through weird sets of circumstances. While doing so, she manages to divert my attention to the Oneida cult among other things.
