Lowest Gas Price in the Nation, or the Lamest Blog Ever Written

So the Gem State is home to the lowest gas price in the nation at $2.36 a gallon in Jerome, Idaho. (Can you tell that I have absolutely no idea what to do with myself now that I am home minus my sweetie?) $2.36 a gallon the lowest price? Not to sound like an old timer, but that is a ton of money! I am still in my twenties, but remember buying gas for 89 cents a gallon when I was in high school. And apparently the average price in the nation is $2.91. I bought gas for $2.52 a gallon today (thanks to my trusty Albertsons Preferred Card three cents off a gallon discount).
Basically I am bored. I don't know what to do with myself, I don't feel good (strep throat? Allergies?) I miss Ben and I plain old want to be whiney tonight. I thought that I could write something thought provoking and interesting about the gas price thing, but no, alas this will live in history as being the lamest post ever.
Something that annoyed me this morning, again showing what a lovely mood I am in, was the picture of the local lady who went to New Orleans for a few weeks to volunteer her time helping the Katrina-ravaged region. Well guess what. I was there for EIGHT MONTHS. That's right, I was there for the better part of a year. Did you live in shelters? Did you help set up the American Red Cross headquarters THREE separate times? I don't think so. So why do you get to be on the front page of the local paper looking all smug because you volunteered a tiny bit of your time, and I get nothing? That feels good to get that out, but still I was volunteering, and wasn't doing it to get any recognition. I just am whiney today, and this is my blog, so I can whine all that I want.

Idahoanne again

So I am back in Idaho for the time being, staying at my parent's house with my sister and nephew. It is crowded, but nice to be home. It has been a pretty exciting last couple of weeks. I have been in Louisiana, and to two separate places in Texas.
So what is going on in my world? Well, my boss in the Red Cross totally sexually harassed me, but it was even creepier than that; he had somehow concocted this relationship between us in his mind, talking about this thing between us; all I can say is that it was creepy. A man twice my age, with slimey long hair and fingernails much too long thinking we belong together... almost too much to take. Anyway, I basically couldn't stand looking at him any more, so decided that my time was up with the Red Cross. (Did I mention that he trapped me in his car for a "field trip" to Baton Rouge from New Orleans one day--quite the drive, where he would not stop talking about the subject of "us".)
So I am in Idaho. And lonely. Things between Ben and I are wonderful except that I am here and he is there. Before I came back to Idaho I went home with him for Easter. It was great to get away. He is coming here in the next few days to meet my parents and that whole hullabaloo. After that, we are going back to New Orleans (where I hope, and know that he has everything needed to get the great job) to start our life together ( you know, house, jobs, future, all that jazz) and ride off into the sunset. I can't wait. I am so glad that he didn't give up, even though he may have wanted to with every fiber of his being for a few days.
I am blissfully happy right now; I have the man that I love ready to move forward with me, lots of job opportunities coming at me, the chance to live in an incredibly exciting city, and am visiting with my family. Life is pretty good right now.

Pressing Room

Tonight was laundry night; never was there a more thrilling way to spend your Wednesday evening! I did seven loads of laundry containing only things of my own. (You see, normally I do the boyfriend's laundry as well since he hates it and it is the girlfriendly thing to do, but since we are on a break (?) I have no idea in hell how to describe us at current.) Anyway I long for the day that I have my own washer and dryer and don't have to feed the machines shiny quarters. (Although one of the highlights of laundry night is looking at the new quarters; West Virginia: The New River. Who'd have known!!) I have actually spend hours day dreaming about the perfect mudroom; sometimes it is ala Martha Stewart with sleek, industrial, yet somehow homey appliances surrounded by everything you could ever possibly need to remove any type of stain. Martha Stewart kind of hypnotises me. I remember one story from her magazine mentioning the "ironing room" in one of her homes. It seems that when the place was built (and from the way it sounds it was built by someone who would make Gatsby blush) the owners were so extravagant that they built a room with many windows in which the washer women pressed all of the house's linens. The windows provided ample light and airflow for doing so. How grand; a room set aside for simply ironing. One day I would like a room with washer and dryer, and maybe (dare I dream?) a sink and some places to hang things.

Random Photo Post

Another exciting Steak Night! photo. The handsome Mr. Ben is sitting with me in this one. (Notice the sexy Nextel phone attached to his hip? Man our group was nerdy!)

This picture was taken not long after people (by that I mean relief workers and contractors) started coming back to Bourbon Street. And look at me surrounded by all the men folk!

Messy

I was doing oh so well with the breakup--didn't call him, didn't text him, didn't email him...Nothing. Wasn't even thinking about him that much (okay that one may be a lie). And then it happened; the two a.m. drunk call. I have to say though, he called three times before I answered. He actually talked to me when he was drunk; exposing vulnerabilities and whatnot that he is unwilling or unable to when sober. We talked about some good things, not only about us, but about him and what is going on in his world. It was nice.
The next morning he called to say he hoped that he hadn't said anything unkind. I appreciated this, and tried to push a meeting between us (damn me; damn you for calling and putting the thought into my head). He declined.
Sunday I went to look for an apartment in New Orleans. I thought, hell since I am going down there, I may as well take him his things, especially things like his rugby cleats. So I went and looked at some apartments (mainly in various states of ghettoness) and then headed to his hotel. I honestly went with the intention of giving him his things and leaving. Needless to say this did not happen. I know that I screwed up a lot in our relationship, and put an unimaginable amount of pressure on him to decide what to do for "us" when I should have been worried about myself. This was so unfair of me; I tried to get this across to him, and damn it! I am so sorry, and know that I have screwed up, so why won't you just forgive me and try again?? I am not certain you are the right man for me, but there are so many good things about you that I am not ready to give up. We need to learn to communicate better that is the main thing. A little work= much happiness. I am whining. I hate that.
Anyway, I pushed myself back into his life (at least for the evening). We had a nice night. Dinner, cuddling, etc. I want more. Why do I feel like I have to push so much? I hate that about me. Right now I am sitting here fighting the urge to text message him goodnight. How silly is that? I don't want to crowd him, but think that this will, so I shouldn't do it. But guess what? I still want to. No, I want him to text message me so that I know it is all okay. What is wrong with me? Why can't it be "not" okay? I just don't want to give up, for many reasons, and come off sounding pathetic in the meantime.
Oh, I didn't run today (in case you couldn't tell), AND I have bronchitis and am on some super cough syrup that makes me kind of loopy. I had the privilege of spending four hours at the doctor today. Love it, love it, love it.

So Cǽsar was assassinated today. (Note: I just wanted some excuse to use an IPA character; I miss studying linguistics!)Today is the day that everyone gets to pretend that they are well-read and studied Shakespeare copiously in college. (I for the record, graduated with a degree in English Literature, and never took a Shakespeare class; I am quite proud of that.)It is interesting how one line from a play from the sixteen hundreds makes it into a) email subject lines (not of my sending, by the way) and b) blogs. It doesn't even mean anything except the date!
I ran tonight when I got off of work; I wish that it didn't get dark so early so that I could run further. My legs are killing me; day three seemed to be the ball-breaker I had expected all along since I haven't ran in six months or so (and my does my body show it!). People were actually somewhat courteous tonight as I ran where they drove; usually I come close to getting mowed down by some much-too-small woman driving a GIANT suv. Still I feel better running. I am not certain if it is because I am so physically exhausted that I cannot help but sleep well, or the fact that endorphins are actually being released into my body.
Sean and Louise leave tomorrow morning. This makes me sad. I am so happy that they were here for me, (I am sure he is too) especially considering the crummy circumstances surrounding their two favorite people on the DR. Thanks for everything guys! See you in Austin!
I called about an apartment in New Orleans that definitely seems do-able. It is quaint, but has a den and a bedroom (so actually two bedrooms?) and it is the cheapest one that I have found yet. Also, it is just remodeled, and it looks gorgeous.
Day three of the breakup is done now; it hasn't been that bad. I miss us as a couple... I could launch into a bunch of sappy stuff right here, but you know what? I haven't cried since the day he broke up with me, and I don't intend on doing so now.
It is also day 200 of your being here. Remember that awesome surprise party I threw for your 100? I am such an awesome girl, and you are blind.

Pi day ala a bit of whining

Today is National Pi Day. Look at today's date: 3.14. I am such a nerd, and felt like I needed to share my nerdiness with the world!

Day two of the breakup. Yeah, yeah... I know get over it; not an easy thing to do when your heart feels like a team of Clidesdales trampled on it. I think he is not brave and stupid for giving up on us. Who knows what will happen. At this point I don't really care. But, running helps. And steak night! with friends does too.

Perfect Book Perfect Time

I forgot to mention this in my earlier post. Yesterday when I was feeling sorry for myself (as I damn well should have been), I came across the perfect book for right now--please read earlier posts to see what I mean by this. The Awakening by Kate Chopin. The very title and the setting could not be more perfect for this time in my life. Books are like very inexpensive counselors; all that you need to do is find a book that matches your mood/situation/whatever, and you have something that will instantly comiserate/cheer or amplify any other emotion you are having. I love books so much. I just have to say that I earned a degree in Literature without ever having read this book; don't know how I did that. But what I think is even more impressive is that I never took a single course about Shakespeare; purposely. But enough about books for the evening. I am sore from running, especially my neck...all that tension crying to get out of my body, and then hurting me when it did escape.

Happier, well at least tipsier times

Here is a lovely picture of some of the crew (Anne, Ben, and Louise) at Steak Night! a Baton Rouge RTT tradition since 2005! Guaranteed the best steak you will ever have! (Probably true without the buckets o' beer too!)

Running From the Median

I should really change the name of my blog. I have been in Baton Rouge rather than Boise for the last six months. That said, I should really have been keeping my blog up while I have been here; it has definitely been an experience like no other.

About five months ago I met the most wonderful man. I fell in love with him quickly; so did he. He fell completely in love with me that he "knew" I was the right one. I went to his parent's house for Thanksgiving and Christmas (Texas being much closer to Louisiana than Idaho). ALl the sappy lovey stuff that new in-love couples do. We had some fights, but we had more amazing times than fights. I thought (and still think he may be...I am not going to give up on that one yet) he was (is) the right one.
The thing is, the situation here working on a Disaster Relief Operation, living in hotels, driving rental cars, and not really knowing anyone outside of those you work with, is very artificial; it is not as though we entered into the relationship with any of our OWN lives surrounding us. (The first time that I typed that sentence it said "own livers", which was funnier, but not what I meant.) This artificiality combined with the quarter life crisis of trying to decide what the hell to do with our selves (separately) put too much pressure on our relationship. He thinks I am not independent enough, I think he is afraid and angry.
Because it was hard for me to think about the hard things--where am I going to live (even narrowing it down to a state would have been good), what kind of career am I going to follow, that type of thing--I simply enjoyed my time with him in the median before jumping out into the traffic of life. This became suffocating I am certain, and led to him thinking that I was not independent. BUT THIS IS AN ARTIFICIAL SITUATION! I don't care if you are fine living your life out of a hotel room; that is not the issue. The issue is not having (or having the time to find) anything outside of the DR in your/my life. So our life became some weird extension of the DR. Definitely not an ideal situation to begin a relationship in, but moving past the situation into the real world is not that large of a leap.
This piled on top of his incredibly critical mind, proved too much for our relationship to bear. I am certain that he has ripped me to shreds in his mind, making mince meat out of me until there was little of the me that he loved there. He did this with our relationship too. He told me on Saturday that he felt like it wasn't going to work (Independence? give me a try after the DR sweetie; I am plenty independent) and that he had felt that way for about three weeks. I believe him when he says this, BUT I know what I am to him. If this is a time/space thing, I will hapily live my life without you until you come to your senses my dear.
Anyway, when I left yesterday morning, he said that when I walked out that door, there would be no us (for awhile; I think I remember him saying this, but will put it in parenthesis because I am not certain; listening is another area that I need to work on) . But, he didn't want any of his things that I had brought down, nor did he insist that I take mine with me. And, I have his Jeep in my custody parked in my parking lot in Baton Rouge. So, eventually, he will have to see me, and maybe by then he will be thinking more clearly, and see what a gem he is willing to give up. I AM WORTH SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS!

I felt terrible for the better part of yesterday. I was sick to my stomach, and exhausted, yet couldn't make my mind shut up enough to sleep.
Monday began miserably. I hear that he also felt miserable; this lightened my mood a bit, I have to say. (If I knew how to add footnotes to my blog, I would. I think they are one of the most wonderful aspects of the written word; they allow you to have ADD and still keep the main piece on track, yet still add whatever random comment you would like to the piece. That said, the footnote would read as follows: If we are both miserable, maybe we shouldn't have broken up? Call me crazy.) End footnote.
I kept myself busy most of the day with some elaborate Excel spreadsheet project that I created for myself tracking all of the missing equipment under my charge. Entering numbers repetitively can be very soothing. But then I got bored, and got sick. My stomach became so upset that I threw up. This has NEVER happened to me before. Sure my emotions are overboard sometimes, but physically ill because someone broke your heart? I felt like Tolstoy's Kitty after being rejected by Vronsky. How ridiculous. I endured the rest of the day with help coming from an impromptu game of football the guys in my group arranged; it was really fun, and a great stress reliever.
After I got off work, I went back to the hotel and changed into my running clothes. I forget how much I love to do this. I have gotten over many a man by running. Today though was different; it was more than that. Thinking about this made me feel so much better. It made everything so much clearer to me.
My hotel sits on a busy road divided by a grassy median. I was able to make it across the first side of traffic without having to even slow my step. Then I was trapped on the median for what seemed like an eternity; so long that I began staring at the cars and daydreaming, making myself stay on the median even longer, losing myself in the thoughts that were running through my mind. Which was where this thought came from:
My life is in the median right now. I have already successfully passed the first lane, which was slower, and easier to get through (finishing college, moving away from home, dating a few bad apples, having a few really good jobs and alll of that other growing-up crap). Right now I am in the median daydreaming, which is where I have been with my relationship too. There is nothing wrong with this, the median can be a very happy, fulfilling place, kind of like a vacation, but not forever. Sooner or later you have to jump into traffic and go. I would love to jump into traffic with him, but right now we both need to figure out all of the other stuff (jobs, school, location...All of the HUGE stuff that makes up life). He also has a TON of stuff that he needs to deal with to make him able to be loved completely by someone,If you ever read this, you really do deserve that and more; you deserve me.
So I abandoned the median. And I ran. Hard. Harder than I have ran in a very long time. I ran hard enough that I threw-up just like I did the first week of track practice in high school. This time though it wasn't because I was resembling some Russian literature lovely; I was getting all of the poison out of my body. The feelings of hurt, anger, saddness...they all needed to go somewhere, and this is how they came out. I kept running. And running. I ran for an hour SOLID, and would have kept going had it not gotten dark.
The cool thing about running like this is that I got mad. I didn't do anything to change the course of our relationship, he did. I have not changed. I am the same awesome person that I have been since you met me. Just because his mood has been in the deep-end for the last little bit, does not mean that this is my fault (although, I am willing to accept that I could have exhibited more independence, and other characteristics the non-disaster Anne posesses). He could decide that it is okay to love me, and just accept that he is worthy of being loved, or he can rip me apart in his head and make me out to be the cause of all of his woes. This is simply not the case. I am so much better than this.
So now I will run. I will run into life. I am going to go home to get my things from Idaho, and come back to New Orleans. What an exciting place to be right now. The city is ripe with rebirth, and I want to be a part of it. I told myself that it would be a great place for us to start a life, but if he doesn't want to, I will start my life there, and maybe (maybe) he will catch up someday. This is a wonderful place for me right now...I can study sugarcane up the ying yang here, go see really good music whenever I want, meet lots of weird people, and never have to wear a down coat again. How exciting is that?
I am looking forward to it very much, even though I hurt very badly. But that is only temporary. How can he write off a love like ours? I don't think he can, and will remain hopeful (but not the stupid, pining type) while I whittle out my new life.
